National Medical Excellence Program

The National Medical Excellence Program® provides support and services when you or a covered family member is facing a transplant or other complex medical procedure. The program can help you:

  • Find the treatment you need within Aetna's Institutes of Excellence network of hospitals and other facilities,
  • Understand and use plan benefits for the services you need, and
  • Coordinate travel and lodging when the care is provided away from your local area.

Aetna's Institutes of ExcellenceTM network is a group of health care facilities that have shown successful outcomes for transplants and other complex medical procedures.

Additional programs:

The National Transplantation Program matches people who need organ or tissue transplants with facilities experienced in performing these services.

The National Special Case Program assigns a special case manager to work with you and your health care team in evaluating treatment options for rare or complex conditions.

The Out-of-Country Care Program helps coordinate care and benefits if you are admitted to the hospital for a medical emergency while traveling abroad.

You can participate in these programs by contacting Member Services. If you use a doctor who belongs to Aetna's network, he or she may also refer you to a program and make arrangements for you to participate if you are eligible.
